September 2014
I think over coffee one morning somebody said, “Wouldn’t it be fun to take a weekend away?” And that was that. If a group of friends want to plan an outing there needs to be some planners in the group. Luckily, we learned we are all planners to varying degrees. Kate took care of the hotel, Mary took care of the train, Gaia and I took care of the activities.
On a September Saturday we hopped aboard Amtrak in Glendale for the two hour journey to downtown San Diego. We checked into the U. S. Grant Hotel and explored the neighborhood.

That night we attended the world premiere of Steve Martin’s play Bright Star at the Old Globe Theater.
This play eventually went to Broadway, won multiple Tony nominations and is now travelling the country. It’s coming to the Ahmanson Theater in October. We highly recommend it even though the story has some problems. (Here is a clue to the problems with the story). We’ll let you judge for yourself…

On Sunday morning we took the ferry to Coronado, rented bikes, and stopped for a bite and a drink at the Hotel del Coronado. We ate dinner that night on the waterfront and hopped the train home on Monday morning. My homing device must have activated around downtown Los Angeles as texts started pouring in from my needy children.
