Los Angeles has a Subway?

February 2016

For our third trip around Los Angeles we took the Art Tour of the Los Angeles Metro subway stations.

We started our day with breakfast at Sweet Salt Food Shop in Toluca Lake.  Breakfast earned high marks from all of us.  We might all agree that breakfast is our favorite part of our outings.

We parked our car for the day at the Universal/Studio City Red Line station.  The transit system in Los Angeles is growing gradually.   In Los Angeles freeway culture, the light rail and subway are definitely not the most efficient form of transportation.  I think even tourists would be better served by taking an uber if they hope to avoid driving.  However, the ride under the mountain to Hollywood was very quick and easy.

Our tour started just outside the Hollywood and Highland Station.  I checked the most recent menu of tour choices and our tour is not being offered right now.  I think it is great that Metro wants to stay dynamic.  Our tour took us to Red Line subway stations.  Check the above link to find out the schedule and options currently offered.

Our elderly docent seemed to have more energy than us.  She was knowledgeable and entertaining and had had anecdotes about growing up in West Los Angeles in the 1930’s and 40’s.   It’s difficult to capture the art in the stations.  That’s why they have tours.  Here is a sample…

After our subway tour we fiddled around Hollywood.  Gaia captured these pictures of her favorite stars.  We also visited the Hollywood Museum, Graumann’s Chinese Theater, and lunch at the Roosevelt Hotel.  One Los Angeles tourism site lists Hollywood as the #4 destination in LA County.   We felt that – teardrops in the sea of humanity.

At the end of our outing, not really hungry for dinner yet, we drove on back to Pasadena and had an ice cream at Afters Ice Cream.
