A Winter Beach Day

February 2017

We always start our adventures with breakfast. If I polled everyone I think we would all agree to give up dinner before giving up breakfast. We drove our farthest distance to date for this meal; to the Paradise Cove Beach Cafe in Malibu.

The Getty Villa

After breakfast we visited the Getty Villa in Malibu. We took a guided tour. I think we have learned from experience that guided tours – live or digital – can really help give context and focus to a museum experience. On this day we took the Collections Highlight Tour. We didn’t stay at the Villa very long but I think we all felt we got so much out of the visit.

Abbot Kinney/Venice Beach

Until this day I had never been to Venice Beach. I never understood the appeal. A friend of a friend told me that Venice Beach is the #1 tourist attraction in Los Angeles County. We enjoyed our afternoon in Venice – but I honestly don’t get it. People come from all over the country and world to see this? I found it just a little too scuzzy. We took another excellent Detour tour. This one titled Venice: Abbot Kinney’s Impossible Dream. We got to learn all about the canals.

At the end of our Detour we shopped in the Abbot Kinney commercial district. I think a few of us bought some overpriced clothing and some underpriced clothing. I was so cold and unprepared for the rest of the day that I splurged $20 on a navy blue peacoat. It’s still standing!

Santa Monica Night Out

I remember driving from Venice to Santa Monica for a dinner and a play – and that Kate got a really good parking place. We ate at Mercado and then saw a one-woman show at the Santa Monica Playhouse. It wasn’t the best play we’ve ever seen – but I’m highly complimentary of any actor who can act and perform alone her own work. Bravo!
