April 2017

Los Angeles has an assortment of Frank Lloyd Wright designed homes. I had wanted to visit the Barnsdall Park and Hollyhock House ever since I read about its restoration and reopening in 2015. We planned our outing around the Hollywood and Los Feliz neighborhoods.

First we ate breakfast at Fred 62 on Vermont Avenue in Los Feliz. I considered a salty breakfast for about 30 seconds – and then ordered the delicious French Toast.
The Hollyhock house sits upon a hill in Barnsdall Park in Los Feliz. Aline Barnsdall commissioned the house (using her oil money) in the early 1900’s and hoped it would become a centerpiece for local artists. The house is certainly worth a visit and the grounds are wonderful. Our tour at Hollyhock house prepared us for our self-guided driving tour of local, privately owned Frank Lloyd Wright homes.
Driving Tour of Other FLW Homes
We drove past three different Frank Lloyd Wright homes: The Ennis House, the Freeman House and the Franklin House. Mary did an excellent job navigating curvy Hollywood streets.
Larchmont Village

Our last stop on this beautiful Spring day was in Larchmont Village. We ambled up and down the lovely shopping street. I discovered Movint clothing store and learned that the clothing from my childhood is now “vintage”.

We stopped by Chevalier’s Books where Mary bought The Invisible Bridge and My Struggle, Book One.

It turned out Mary had already read The Invisible Bridge and as far as I know she has only made it through Book One of Knausgaard’s seven book series.

We finished our day with ice cream at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream.
